What is the AWDF

Welcome to the
American Working Dog Federation
Preserving and protecting our working dogs' heritage in America is a goal that unites all member clubs of AWDF, an organization founded in 1989 to strengthen the working breeds in the United States.

The AWDF is the first organization in the United States to apply for membership in the FCI. The FCI accepted the AWDF application, and the AWDF has since been invited annually to participate in the FCI World Team Championship and the FCI International Tracking Championship.

AWDF presently includes 13 member clubs. The breeds represented  include working German Shepherd Dogs, Malinois,  Boxers, American Bulldogs, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Bouviers, Schnauzers, Airedales, Hovawarts, Pit Bull Terriers  and American Staffordshire Terriers.

AWDF is dedicated to preserving working dogs' utility - and thus their service potential to man - into the future. Each member organization promotes activities, education, and breeding standards with the goal of preserving and strengthening these working breeds.

AWDF seeks to incorporate and nurture all aspects of working dogs' ability to reach their potential in their various types of work.

The FCI World Championship is a Schutzhund 3 Championship for clubs from all over the world.

Each year, 5 dog/handler teams and 1 alternate are selected to represent the AWDF.

To choose the AWDF team that will participate in the FCI World Championship, the AWDF holds a yearly championship for all the AWDF member clubs. The top two scorers of that event are on the team automatically.

The AWDF Championship is hosted each year by an AWDF member club.

Each member club may send as many as nine dog/handler teams from their organization, three Schutzhund 3s, three Schutzhund 2s and three Schutzhund 1s. The winning team of the Championship is the team with the highest passing combination score from each category (SchH1, SchH2, and IPO3).

The remaining four team members are chosen by AWDF's FCI Championship Committee from a list of nominees from the member breed clubs
